In this video, I help David from the UK improve his backward barefooting efficiency and form. Watch the video below as I go over step-by-step advice that can be easily implemented in order to enjoy barefooting for years to come without all the hard falls.
David and I share something in common: we have both suffered a broken neck. I have had 2 of them. Coming back from a catastrophic injury is both mental and physical. You have to listen to your body, strengthen your mind, do not do anything stupid, and follow expert advice. Physical conditioning to strengthen the area around an injury is also an important factor. While I am in no way a Doctor, I have walked many people through traumatic injuries and other life circumstances through safe barefooting practices and common sense.

Here is something David asked me:
“Well thank you for taking the time out to do this ..top man.
Where did you find your confidence from after breaking your neck ?
My fitness is good but after my Neck injury and spinal damage I’m struggling to find the passion and push myself but I’ve always been a positive person but this has knocked me big.Taking baby steps at the moment.. not fallen yet backwards but suppose I know it’s coming maybe that’s what’s holding me back at the moment struggle mentally but I know with time hopefully it will come and I get the mojo back .. I’m skiing backwards at the moment at around 32-36 on feet but going to have to increase the speed for back toes and at the moment it’s struggle.
I’ve had 2 years out so need more water time ..
Thanks again ?”
Here is my advice:
1. Find the simple pleasure in improving the basics and enjoying the rush of barefooting without falling and become a master of slow speeds, living in the moment, and the reality that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
2. Follow your gut instinct and if you are in doubt, ask for advice. “For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in a multitude of counselors there is safety.”
3. Keep barefooting in perspective. It is not life. It is an amazing bonus and the fact that you have challenges is truly a first-world problem 🙂
4. I was psychologically unable to get back into barefooting for quite awhile until I found my confidence. Allow your body to adapt and make each session
a win until your confidence returns.
